Deadly Continues to Cause a Stir by Expat
What a difference a month can make!
Last month Quantum Entertainment, the production company behind the Homolka-Bernardo movie Deadly, declared that the film was never intended to sell in Canada and was not interested in finding a Canadian distributor for the movie. This month, however, the movie's producer is pushing for an early Canadian release date, which could see the movie in theatres at the same time as Karla Homolka's July 5th release from prison.
Clearly the producers have realized that there is money to be had and that releasing the film early in Canada will create a buzz that will carry south of the 49th.
This situation certainly gives credence to that old saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity".
"Greed--for lack of a better word--is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms--greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge--has marked the upward surge of mankind."
That was Michael Douglas' character in 1987's Wall Street.
The production company behind the movie is certainly on that bandwagon, but I am not so sure that the families of Leslie Mahaffy or Kristen French would agree with the sentiment.
Making a movie based on true crime is one thing, but arranging its release to time with the prison release of the child murderer that it is based upon is just utterly disgusting.
