It's great that you have such a passion for your country. I hope that this appointment works out well for both Canada and the US.

It seems as though Wilkins reluctance to answer the maple syrup question or hum a few bars of "O Canada" is more than likely due to the fact that he just plain couldn't answer the question or hum the anthem than anything else. Perhaps he did not want to open himself up to having to answer questions to which he did not know the answer? By all accounts, he certainly knows very little about Canada.

I am thinking that the appointment says more about Bush rewarding his longtime party fundraiser and family friend, than his opinion about Canada. In 2001 Bush tried to reward Wilkins with ambassadorship to Chile and a plum federal judgeship, but Wilkins turned both down and waited for something else to come along.

Perhaps being timid and bland are not such terrible traits in the wake of Wilkins much hated predecessor, Paul Cellucci. Remember the celebration that ensued after Cellucci's departure last month? ;o)

Ignorance and a willingness to learn are definitely welcome compared to Cellucci's confrontational, lecturing style.
