How American Are You? by Expat
After blaming the Expatriate Fudge Factor (props to Matt for coining the term!) for my less than perfect performance on The Ultimate Canadian Test, I thought that I would test myself to see if assimilation has taken ahold of me and stripped me of my Canuckitude.
I was doing the test and it seemed vaguely familiar, and when I was almost finished I realized I'd already taken it after seeing it posted on a message board. Apparently taking it twice was of no help whatsoever, as I still scored just 30%.
Just yesterday I said to Nancy that I thought you might be a Republican and I worried that I might occasionally offend you! Now I find out I've only offended you by thinking you were Republican! My deepest apologies, seriously.
And as for the American quiz, I'm sure my score suffers everytime I respond to the question about that stupid Lee Greenwood song. Gah, I hate that song! It was first released while I worked at a country music station in Canada, and we had to play it because it was popular, and I think it just made us feel weird. It's so serious. You know that if there was a "Canadian pride" song it would have to mention beer and fishing and self-mocking stuff. Even when Stompin' Tom gets patriotic, he still sings about drunk people :)
Nah... nothing offends me! I would have thought that my frequent rants against Fox News would have given my views away though. :p
What on earth was that Greenwood song doing on a Canadian radio station? You would think that the CRTC would have jumped all over that! ;) LOL
I was trying to think of a serious Canadian pride song, but most of them are quite tongue in cheek as you say. Although, I have to admit that I like that about Canadians. We tend to have a sense of humour about ourselves. I think that it is dangerous to take oneself too seriously.
My favourite song at the moment is "Canadian Man" by Paul Brandt, simply because I dig the irony of it! I wanted it to be played at our wedding, but it was a no go. LMAO
"Canadian Man" sounds like something Stompin' Tom would have written, too :) I forgot that every Canadian song has to have a "skidoo" in it as well. Beer, hockey, skidoo.
Maybe your husband didn't want it played at your wedding because he's not a Canadian man, and didn't want people assuming you were hiding any surprises under your dress.
