God Has High Speed by Expat
Thank you so much for all of the supportive emails in response to my very frustrated post regarding my immigration debacle. I certainly appreciate every one of them.
Well apparently there is a God - and he must have high speed!
After blogging about my woes, things with immigration got *somewhat* sorted out and I now have my work authorization card in hand, my social security card is in the mail, and I will be applying for a learner's license the moment that it arrives! Yes, I do feel as though I just turned fifteen again.
While reading the book from the DMV, I was astonished to see that there are some differences between what I learned in Saskatchewan and what they expect you to know here. For example, I previously learned about the "three second rule" when it comes to following another car; however, here that is shortened to a "two second rule". I will have to study up to ace this exam. It is odd having to reprogram myself on something that has become so second nature.
After I get my license again, I will be back to working. Anyone need a history nerd of the Canadian prairie variety in the state of Illinois?

I didn't think so, but seeing as God has high speed, I might as well put the word out there!
Oh Expat.. this is wonderful news!! I must admit that having to redo the driving test would be nerve wracking. I too am of the old school and go by the three second rule ( maybe it is a Canadian thing ). I still count it out, often. These things do become ingrained after years of driving. Wishing you all the best with the test. How exciting! :-)

Now, onto driving tests...
Flippy and I have a theory that because of the success of the song, "Jesus Take the Wheel", combined with recent changes in the make-up of the Supreme Court, there might be some unique new driving regulations to contend with here in the US. While taking your driving test, remember that it's perfectly acceptable to tell an instructor that if you're about to collide with another vehicle, you'll respond by throwing your hands in the air and asking Jesus to take the wheel. You'll get extra points for this answer, I'm sure of it!

By the way, in the dark ages, when I took my written exam, there was nothing about any "seconds", so even if you'd lived here your whole life, the exam changes all the time. I learned that it was one second for every mph.
Oh, and I learned my "seconds" rule online or something. It wasn't on my test. I aced my written exam, but almost failed my driving test. At 16, I was pretty nervous driving with an unfriendly strange man in my car. Plus, I was a pretty crappy driver at first. Luckily, for me and the rest of the world, I improved quickly.

I aced the written and practical exams the first time around. I think that is why I am nervous about this. While all my friends had to take the test scores of times, I went in there and nailed it! Now, I am not so sure. All those years of creating bad habits may have caught up with me. :S LOL
I hear you on having the strange man in the car, Flippy. I remember feeling really weirded out and nervous about that too.

As for driving, I didn't realize Sask has a three second rule for following a car. I always thought you had to leave at least a 3 hour gap between cars. ;-)
