Canadian Expatriates, its contributors, and readers have been invited by Foreign Affairs Canada to participate in a series of eDiscussions. The current topic is “Showcasing Canadian Culture and Know-How Abroad”.

We are asked to consider the following questions:

What role does Canadian culture and know-how play in our foreign policy?

How might the government best promote Canadian talent and expertise in the world?

The eDiscussion runs from April 4 to May 6, 2005. At its conclusion, a summary of the discussion will be sent to senior policy planners.

My apologies for the recent influx of spam and the length of time between posts. I have found myself in the process of rather larger move (to a state that boasts a *gasp* Boston Pizza!) and time has been passing all too quickly.

Today, my husband and I went to the local Wal-Mart to pick up a few things that we needed to get the house in order to be sold. While we were waiting in line, my husband nudged me and told me to look at the cake that the gentleman in front of us was purchasing. From my vantage point, I could see an American flag drawn in thick red, white, and blue icing.

"Captain America," I whispered to my husband.

We have an ongoing joke regarding the folks in our neighbourhood who adorn themselves in head to toe patriotic clothing.

"No," he said. "Read it."

There, written clearly in blue icing, was "Because Canada wouldn't keep you... Welcome to America, Bob!"

We both broke out in laughter.
