Here is a small snippet of what she said:
What Brian Mulroney wanted in 1993 was not a successor who could actually have a chance to govern, but a scapegoat who would bear the electoral burden of his unpopularity, and allow him to retire 'undefeated' into the historical pantheon of which he is convinced he is a member.Dang, that's got to hurt!
Read Campbell's entire response here, Kim Campbell Gives as Good as She Gets.
What does Mulroney think of the new tell-all book?
A spokesman said Monday that Mulroney was stunned to turn on his television and learn that his private and often R-rated reflections would be on store shelves this week in a book written by Peter C. Newman.Read more about Mulroney's reaction here, Mulroney Betrayed by Friend's Salty Book.
" 'I was reckless in talking with Peter C. Newman,' " Mulroney said, according to spokesman Luc Lavoie.
" 'This was my mistake and I'm going to have to live with it.' "
And to think that this book has come out just in time for a certain someone's birthday! What better way to celebrate than by reading about the dirt on Parliament Hill! :p

I have never been a fan of Mr. Mulroneys. I do feel he is quite arrogant. What I don't like is the way the material for the book was obtained.
ReplyDeleteI am quite certain that most of us have made statements, in privacy and in trust, that we would not want to share in a public forum.
Kim Campbell was on "Real Time with Bill Maher" a few months ago (May 6, 2005 to be exact), and she was fabulous. Told jokes, had a sense of humour, i.e. acted nothing like a politician.
ReplyDeleteSimply Coll,
ReplyDeleteThis is from an article today:

"Did Newman violate an agreement to print some of Mulroney's recollections -- and not others?
Mulroney says yes. But Newman says Mulroney "knew I had a tape recorder . . . he knew stuff he was telling me would be used in the book." Anybody who's ever done historical research or journalistic writing knows of the interviewee who gives a sanitized, politically correct version of their thoughts, then waits until a tape recorder has been turned off before delivering the truth.
Duplicity -- or self-preservation, depending on one's perspective.
If an agreement existed between Newman and Mulroney, the former might have broken it -- or the latter might have misunderstood it. Either way, this will further the inaccurate stereotype of the journalist-as-vulture."

LMAO at "journalist-as-vulture". Is it really a stereotype when it is true? :p
I must say that Newman, being a friend of Mulroney's for 40 years, was privy to much more than the standard fare. Certainly Mulroney spoke to him as a friend first, and an as interviewee second. I imagine that the book comes as quite a betrayal.
Matt,
Not sure what to say to that. LOL Mulroney certainly was Captain of a sinking ship and rather than going down with the rest of the party, he chose to jump. Campbell never stood a chance. Wasn't that the election that saw the Progressive Conservative species become nearly extinct when it dwindled down to a single breeding pair?
Mudpuppy,
I wish that I would have had an opportunity to see that. I thought that Campbell's response to Mulroney was very well done. This book is going to put plenty of people into a difficult position by the sound of it.
Kelly,
I am looking forward to reading the book as well. It will be interesting to view events from a "behind the scenes" perspective. Part of me sees the book as the stuff that trashy tabloids are made of though! LOL
Wow...
Sorry for the long comment, everyone!
"it dwindled down to a single breeding pair"
ReplyDeleteGoodness! The very thought of Elsie Wayne and (now Liberal Premier of Quebec) Jean Charest as a "breeding pair" just put me off my dinner.
Ms. Campbell was easily the worst PM ever. During the election campaign, she refused to take briefings from her advisors. And she approved this idiotic ad campaign mocking Mr. Chretien's speech impediment caused by a childhood illness.
Going into the election, the PCs were ahead in the polls. With her leadership, they sank into oblivion.

ReplyDeleteSorry Paul. I didn't mean to make you lose your lunch! ;)
That is from an old Double Exposure sketch parodying Hinterland Who's Who.
I totally forgot about that ad campaign, but now that you mention it, I remember it quite clearly!
